Local Food, Adventures, and Shopping

The Homestead on FoxRidge Bed and Breakfast, located in the beautiful hills of the Texas Hill Country, is a short drive from the most popular vacation destination in Texas, San Antonio! There are many ways one may spend your vacation in this city of great diversity and entertainment, as well as the local art, craft, food and wine festivals that take place across the small towns that make up The Texas Hill Country, most within a short driving distance of The Homestead on FoxRidge Bed and Breakfast.

Most convenient to The Homestead on FoxRidge is Old Town Helotes, which hosts First Saturday Trade Days, featuring a variety of food, antiques, local crafts and live music, as well as the annual Cornyval Festival which includes a PRCA rodeo.

One of the most visited historical Texas landmarks is "The Alamo". The memories of James Bowie, David Crockett, and William B. Travis are as powerful today as when the Texian Army under Sam Houston shouted "Remember the Alamo!"

Also, home to the largest concentration of missions in North America, the Missions Tour provides an interesting look into Texas history. In the 18th century, the Spanish church established five Catholic missions along the San Antonio River. Included in this tour is Mission San Juan, Mission Concepcion, Mission Espada, The Alamo and Mission San Jose.

Government Canyon State Natural Area, which borders our property, is known for it's protective habitat of the golden-cheeked warbler and black capped vireo, and is a great place to go bird-watching. The Natural Area has over 11,500 acres of remote gently rolling grasslands to rugged canyons and hills. There are 40 miles of hiking and biking trails. Visitors may enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including picnicking, trail running, geocaching, and regularly scheduled guided hikes. Some of the monthly hikes/programs include: Haiku Hike, Hike the Canyon, Explore the Canyon, and Family Fun.

While visiting The Homestead on FoxRidge, you may want to enjoy a romantic dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, Grey Moss Inn, located a short ten minute drive away. We recommend dining al fresco in the stone-walled patio under the branches of massive oak trees, or you may choose to dine by candlelight in the coziness of the romantic interior of the Inn. The Inn, also well known for their extensive wine list, has a wonderful and exciting history of having been a stagecoach stop in the days when Indians still roamed the southwest and settlers were staking land claims in hopes for a new life out west.

Just a short drive into Old Town Helotes, you may also want to choose another dining adventure known by many as the "musical birthplace" of Willie Nelson - John T. Floore's Country Store. Opened in 1942, John T. Floore's Country Store was not a store at all, but a unique Texas Dance Hall and Cafe. Long renowned for it's world famous tamales and homemade bread, there is a full menu of great "Texas Cafe" style food, ice cold beer and a truly unique "Texcentric" atmosphere. Live music venues of well known country artists still perform each week throughout the year.

San Antonio is also well known for the fun-filled, family adventures of Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld, which are approximately twenty minutes away.

Bandera- the "Cowboy Capital of the World"-- The Grotto-907 13th Street; Mulberry's Wine Bar-Main Street and Mulberry - 823 Main Street; Gunslinger-1107 Cypress St. (off Main St.). Cowboy couture and ranch furnishings.
